Coup plot denied, top brass purged. On 4 November President Fernando Lugo replaced all three service commanders with officers promoted to general rank only last year: General Bartolomé Ramón Pineda, formerly commander of military institutes, took over command of the army from General Juan Óscar Velázquez; General Hugo Gilberto Aranda, formerly chief of his service's general staff, took over from General Darío Dávalos as commander of the air force; and Admiral Emérito Orué, formerly commander of the marine corps, replaced Admiral Claudelino Recalde as commander of the navy.
