PERU: Mining camp is latest target of violent protest actions

A raid on a copper mining camp in northern Peru which left two dead and three disappeared is feared to herald a resumption of protest actions which peaked in 2005 with mass demonstrations which claimed one life. The protests are akin to those of the Amazonian indigenous groups concerned about the environmental fallout from the project; the most recent raid takes place against the backdrop of warnings from indigenous organisations that they may break off talks with the government and resume their protest actions.
