MEXICO: Tensions high on Ayotzinapa anniversary

Truth and justice still elude victims’ families nine years on from the kidnapping, murder, and disappearance of 43 student teachers in Mexico’s Guerrero state. On 26 September, to mark the ninth anniversary of the day the students from the Ayotzinapa rural teacher training college were abducted, thousands took to the streets in Mexico City (CDMX) to demand answers. This anniversary comes at a particularly tense moment, given recent disagreements between the government led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and the students’ parents and their legal representatives.
