In brief: Brazil’s Petrobras announces wind energy projects

* Brazil’s state-controlled oil company Petrobras has requested a licence from the federal environmental regulator (Ibama) to authorise wind energy installations in ten offshore locations. Petrobras has estimated that, if Ibama approves the projects, the proposed wind farms would have a total power generation capacity of 23 gigawatts (GW). Of the ten proposed locations, seven are near Brazil’s north-eastern coast, two near the south-eastern coast, and one near the coast of the southern state Rio Grande do Sul. On the same day that Petrobras announced its offshore wind projects, the oil giant published a press release stating that it had signed a partnership with the Brazilian electronic components manufacturer WEG to build onshore wind turbines. According to the press release, Petrobras will invest R$130m (US$26.44m) for a batch of these turbines, each with a potential generation capacity of 7 megawatts (MW).
