An arrest in relation to a femicide case has sparked a fierce political battle in Mexico. Uriel Carmona, the attorney general in Morelos state, was arrested in an operation led by the attorney general’s office of Mexico City (FGJCDMX) on 4 August. Carmona, who has links to the left-wing opposition Partido de la Revolución Democrática (PRD), and other members of the political opposition, has denounced the arrest as illegal, unconstitutional, and politically motivated. The ruling left-wing Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena), meanwhile, is standing behind the arrest as a legitimate step in the fight for justice in the case and the wider struggle against corruption and impunity.
