BRAZIL: Bolsonaro’s reckoning at the electoral court

Throughout the 2022 election campaign, the right-wing former president Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2023) consistently made unfounded claims of electoral fraud, which led the inspector-general of Brazil’s top electoral court (TSE), Benedito Gonçalves, to open an investigation into Bolsonaro in December. That process has now led to a trial, which began on 22 June, in which Bolsonaro’s political future may be at stake, as he could be barred from running in elections for the next eight years, if found guilty. On 27 June Gonçalves was the first TSE judge to cast his vote in favour of disenfranchising the former president.
