BRAZIL: Uncertain road ahead for EU-Mercosur trade deal

A top diplomatic priority for Brazil’s government led by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has been the ratification of the trade deal between the European Union (EU) and the Southern Common Market (Mercosur). However, in a meeting on 12 June with Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, the EU’s executive branch, Lula criticised some of the strict environmental protection measures proposed in the free trade agreement (FTA).
