ARGENTINA: Opposition JxC torn over electoral alliances

Argentina’s presidential race took a significant turn on 14 June, the deadline for parties to register electoral alliances for the August primaries. There was no major surprise within the ruling left-of-centre Frente de Todos (FdT) except a last-minute change of name to Unión por la Patria (UP). But there were serious differences within the main right-of-centre opposition coalition Juntos por el Cambio (JxC) over whether to open up to incorporate a branch of Peronism. Serious pressure is being brought to bear on the JxC by the strong showing in the polls of Javier Milei, the far-right candidate who casts himself as an anti-establishment outsider.
