HAITI: Debate continues over international military deployment
Support is growing for the request for foreign military deployment [WR-22-41] by Haiti’s Prime Minister Ariel Henry to address the security, economic, and health crisis in the country amid a new cholera outbreak and prolonged gang-imposed fuel blockade. Following last week’s call by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres for the UN Security Council (UNSC) to consider the proposal, the US representative to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, said that the US and Mexico have worked together on drafting two UNSC resolutions, one of which authorises an international security mission to restore order in Haiti. Such a move, however, is contentious and Thomas-Greenfield herself underlined “we are keenly aware of the history of international intervention in Haiti” and that the UNSC and international community “must look at its role differently than it has in the past”.
