MEXICO: Fighting fentanyl production
Mexico’s defence ministry (Sedena) secured “a historic seizure” of 542kg of the synthetic opioid fentanyl in Culiacán municipality, Sinaloa state, on 4 July. The announcement of the drug bust, which Sedena said was the biggest fentanyl seizure ever recorded in Mexico, came just days before President Andrés Manuel López Obrador travelled to meet with US President Joe Biden in Washington. Efforts to curb the production and trafficking of fentanyl was to be a major topic of conversation at the presidents’ meeting, given that fentanyl remains one of the top priority security issues for the Biden administration.
