PERU: Mining conflicts take centre stage
The last week has seen the intensification of three separate mining conflicts in Peru, with local communities stepping up their campaigns against the mining companies on their doorsteps. Anti-mining protests have gained momentum since community activists succeeded on 28 October in forcing the owners of the Las Bambas copper mine in the Apurímac region to begin paying royalties to the local community. Further protests at the Apumayo gold mine (Ayacucho), where equipment was set alight, and the Antamina copper and zinc mine (Ancash), where roadblocks forced the suspension of operations, have triggered alarm from the industry. President Pedro Castillo will now face pressure to come down in support of either demonstrators or the mining companies.
