NICARAGUA: Reforms to criminal procedural code spark concerns
New legislative changes approved last week, which increase the time that people can be detained without accusation from 48 hours to 90 days, are serving as the latest cause for concern among the opposition ahead of November’s general elections in Nicaragua. The amendments, which follow other contentious legislation approved in recent months which the opposition warns is aimed at quashing dissent, such as the so-called ‘foreign agents’ law [WR-20-42], have also attracted international condemnation from institutions like the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).
