HAITI: Crisis intensifies as opposition makes good its threat
Opposition parties are trying to form a parallel government, naming supreme court judge Joseph Mécène Jean Louis as Haiti’s interim president for two years. The announcement came hours after President Jovenel Moïse announced on 7 February that 23 people had been arrested, including another supreme court judge, Yvickel Dabrésil, and police (PNd’H) general inspector Marie Louise Gauthier, accused of plotting a coup to overthrow and assassinate him. Haiti is embroiled in a constitutional crisis over presidential term limits: backed by various sectors including the supreme council of the judiciary (CSJP), the judicial oversight body, the opposition maintains Moïse’s term ended on 7 February, which he rejects. Human rights groups and magistrates’ associations condemned the latest arrests as “illegal and arbitrary”. The crisis looks set to intensify, plunging the country into further turmoil and unrest.
