NICARAGUA: Ortega sparks fresh transparency concerns

President Daniel Ortega has once again sent ripples of alarm through the international community. His announcement that national and foreign observers will not be permitted to “oversee" the general election in November 2011 has provoked fears of a repeat performance of the municipal vote in November 2008. This took place in the absence of observers and saw the US and the European Union (EU) temporarily suspend aid in response to widespread allegations of fraud.
