It took two decades in coming but the left-wing Frente Farabundo
Martí para la Liberación Nacional (FMLN) finally achieved a longstanding
objective this week - the presidency of congress. FMLN Deputy Sigfrido Reyes,
who will hold the position until 1 May 2012, hailed the symbolic achievement of
securing the presidency of the legislature, which he said had always been “off
limits for left-wing parties". But, symbolism is far less important than the
fact that Reyes and the FMLN will now be able to set the agenda in the run-up to
