The French President, Nicolas Sarkozy, was received by a brass band
playing the Marseillaise when he visited Haiti last week, becoming the first
French head of state to visit the former colony. There were some sporadic
protests, with leaflets disseminated blaming France for its egregious
enslavement and abasement of Haitians in the past, but Sarkozy did his best to
win over naysayers by promising a substantial aid package. “I want only to say
to the Haitian people, 'You are not alone,'" Sarkozy said at a news conference
alongside President René Préval on the grounds of Haiti's devastated national
