Seven congressmen have left the ruling Frente Para la Victoria (FPV)
in the space of the last week, citing differences with President Cristina
Fernández and her predecessor and husband Néstor Kirchner. The defections come
eight months before important mid-term legislative elections. They are likely to
embolden Argentina's four main farming unions to push for a bigger gesture from
the government or to carry out their threat to play a more political role. On
the plus side for the government, it managed to persuade the farming unions to
participate in talks again, forestalling further strike action for now, although
