Mercedes Cabanillas will serve as Peru's new interior minister after
Remigio Hernani resigned last week for “personal reasons" just four months into
the job. Cabanillas, a longtime member of the ruling Partido Aprista Peruano
(PAP), became the first female minister in Peru's history during the first
García administration (1985-1990). Her priorities will be “reorganising", a
euphemism for purging, the police, and then enlarging the size of the force,
which she calculates is some 30,000 members short. She also highlighted the need
to fight corruption and formulate a new public security programme - all promises
largely unfulfilled by her predecessors.End of preview - This article contains approximately 542 words.
