In late July the government led by President Evo Morales released the final results of the national census carried out in November 2012. The report is proving highly contentious. One apparent discrepancy is the reported size of Bolivia’s population; the final report put the total national population at 10.02m, 373,000 less than the 10.39m initially reported. This has triggered protests in various regions, given the use of the census to determine the assignation of budget resources as well as seats in the national legislature. Another talking point was the fact that just 41% of the adult population (over 15) identified as indigenous, down from 62% in the last (2001) census.
