But, given the party’s propensity to ignore popular opinion, it still came as a surprise that the moderate mayor of Santa Tecla, Oscar Ortiz, one of the most highly regarded politicians in El Salvador, has been chosen to stand as the running mate of the veteran guerrilla Salvador Sánchez Cerén - and that he has accepted the invitation.
