NICARAGUA: Ortega faces a taxing task

President Daniel Ortega has begun the process of discussing tax reform with other sectors. The need for reform is a core demand of the IMF with which, for all Ortega’s anti-imperialist rhetoric, he announced at the end of last year that he was seeking a new agreement. As has previously been the case, the sticking point with regard to the reform is likely to be the issue of tax exemptions currently enjoyed by the private sector.
