BRAZIL: Migration of Rio traffickers creates new hotspots

The authorities of Rio de Janeiro state have started carrying out a massive redeployment of police resources to counter a new threat resulting from the success of the ‘pacification’ drive in slum districts previously controlled by drug gangs. This is the migration of drug gangs from the ‘pacified’ favelas to other parts of the city, most notably Niterói and São Gonçalo, on the south-eastern side of the Bay of Guanabara. Another set of problems is the residual presence of drug gangs, the new breed of ‘militias’ and police corruption within the ‘pacified’ favelas.
