COLOMBIA: Petro and Mockus clear electoral hurdles
Enrique Peñalosa is the big obstacle facing Gustavo Petro. For Antanas Mockus, it is the national electoral council (CNE). This week, both candidates for the mayoralty of Bogotá managed to overcome these hurdles, at least for the time being. Mockus’s candidacy is still being threatened by another formal challenge before the CNE and Peñalosa’s support in the 30 October regional elections could grow again –or Petro’s slide- but at present the two left-of-centre candidates are clearly destroying the thesis that Peñalosa’s performance on election day would be a mere formality; the race is far from over.
