BRAZIL: Brazil joins South American arms race

Earlier this week President Lula da Silva authorised Brazil's air force to spend US$2.2bn on new war planes, marking the country's entry into the South American arms race. Brazil's last big purchase of military equipment was in 2001. The Lula administration has since put the previous government's military re-equipment plan on hold. However, the recent military purchases made by President Hugo Chávez of Venezuela forced Lula to review his government's military policy and spending.
