Peruvians woke up on the Day of the Dead on 1 November to discover that a
gang of some 50 armed men had obliterated a police station in Ocobamba,
Apurímac, with rocket-propelled grenades, killing the commanding officer,
Héctor Zegarra Bernaola, and seriously injuring the other three officers on
duty. It was the most audacious attack since members of Sendero Luminoso
kidnapped 71 employees of Argentina's Techint in June 2003. This time, however,
Sendero does not appear to have been involved. The interior minister, Luis Alva,
blamed the attack on "narcoterrorists".End of preview - This article contains approximately 693 words.
