CHILE-PERU: Fujimori turns up in Santiago, is arrested

Chile, embroiled already in a row with Peru over maritime boundaries, has just landed another Peruvian hot potato. Fugitive former president Alberto Fujimori flew into Santiago unannounced on 7 October and promptly announced that he intended 'to remain temporarily in Chile, as part of the process of returning to Peru'. On the strength of an arrest warrant filed by Peru via Interpol, the Chilean authorities arrested Fujimori pending extradition proceedings.
