Ecuador's second-largest indigenous group, Confederación Nacional Amazónica de Ecuador (Cofenae), has withdrawn its support from President Lucio Gutiérrez for his reneging on electoral promises to increase social aid. Cofenae also announced that it would join the country's most powerful indigenous group, Confederación de Nacionalidades Indí­genas (Conaie), in opposing the Gutiérrez administration.
