The second day of a general strike called by the opposition begins today. By recent standards, the first one passed off peacefully enough. However, with protests growing ever larger and more frequent, the pressure on President Jean-Bertrand Aristide is mounting. US Secretary of State Colin Powell said yesterday that he was very disturbed about the situation in Haiti. He urged Aristide to accept a proposal tabled by Haiti's Catholic bishops in November aimed at solving the crisis by creating a so-called council of 'wise men' to try and mediate a compromise between the government and the opposition.
