Dean Barrow from the United Democratic Party swept past Said Musa and his
People's United Party in the general elections on 7 February. The UDP won 25 of
the 31 seats in the lower chamber of the parliament and is promising to make
major changes. Musa, who has been prime minister for the past 10 years, has seen
fast economic growth in his first government curdle into sluggishness in the
past couple of years, despite the start of oil production, as his government,
under international pressure, brought the fiscal deficit down from the 9% of GDP
