Pdvsa's new contracts follow the nationalisist push of President Hugo Chávez , who has already taken control of other sectors of the economy he considers "strategic". Since January, Chávez has completed a number of "nationalisations", most notably of the telephone company Cantv and the electricity supplier, EDC. However, it seems that the migration of foreign oil companies to minority stakeholder status in the Orinoco tarbelt will be the last push for the time being. In an interview to the Spanish news agency Efe, he declared that new nationalisations "are not in our plans" and called on the private sector "to work with us".
