GUATEMALA: Semilla splinter group registers ahead of next year’s elections

Guatemala’s electoral authority (TSE) recently registered Raíces, a new political party formed out of the rump of President Bernardo Arévalo’s now-suspended left-of-centre Movimiento Semilla (Semilla), ahead of the 27 June 2027 general election. As in previous elections, the presidential race, from which anti-corruption reformist President Arévalo is constitutionally barred, looks set to be crowded, with some two dozen political parties currently registered, while familiar concerns regarding links between politicians and organised crime have re-emerged.
