MEXICO: Sheinbaum includes sovereignty in independence cry

On 15 September President Claudia Sheinbaum held an event to commemorate the anniversary of Mexico’s independence, celebrated on 16 September. As is customary, she led the national cry of independence, known as the Grito, a tradition dating back to a priest’s call for rebellion against the Spanish in 1810, triggering the Mexican War of Independence. Sheinbaum used the cry and the ceremony to highlight key issues for her government, including the defence of sovereignty and migrant rights.
