MEXICO: Electoral process begins amid INE tensions

Mexico’s national electoral institute (INE) announced the formal start of the 2026-2027 electoral process on 10 September. The elections, due to take place on 6 June 2027, will see the public vote for over 19,000 positions, including the entire 500-member federal lower chamber, 17 state governorships, and thousands of local seats. However, the beginning of the process was somewhat overshadowed by the resignation of the INE’s executive secretary, Claudia Espino, the previous day, exposing internal fissures within the electoral body.
