ECUADOR: Regional elections stir up controversy
Local and regional elections will be held in Ecuador on 29 November, 11 weeks earlier than planned. Amid growing concern about a series of judicial rulings which are hindering the participation of the left-wing opposition, Ecuadorean political analyst Santiago Basabe told Spanish newspaper El País on 17 August that the elections will be “the most opaque since the return to democracy” in 1979.
