The dramatic announcement on 10 June that Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro was being suspended from office seems to have been wildly premature. The declaration came from Gloria Arizabaleta, the president of the accusations commission in the lower chamber of congress, who confusingly hails from the ruling left-wing Pacto Histórico. This prompted claims from Abelardo de la Espriella, the far-right candidate in the 21 June run-off election, that Petro was seeking to temporarily leave office so that he could evade legal impediments restricting him from campaigning on behalf of the continuity candidate, Iván Cepeda. Ironically, more focus on Petro is probably the last thing that Cepeda needs as he tries to rein in De la Espriella.End of preview - This article contains approximately 1400 words.
