CHILE: Unions lead protest against Kast administration

Tens of thousands of Chileans marched in Santiago on 1 May to mark International Workers’ Day. This is traditionally a big day in Chile but there was an added edge this year with trade unions being joined by other social organisations calling for the defence of social rights, which they argued were being “threatened” by the austerity of the far-right government led by José Antonio Kast. Days earlier the government announced funding cuts to the social development and family ministry.
