BRAZIL: Lula suffers defeats in congress

Brazil’s congress has dealt back-to-back blows to the government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. On 29 April the senate rejected Lula’s nominee for the vacant seat on the supreme court (STF), Jorge Messias. The next day, both legislative chambers voted to overturn a presidential veto on a bill that could reduce the prison time of former president Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2023), who was convicted last year for plotting a coup in 2022 after losing the election against Lula.
