MEXICO: Tensions resurface over US security intervention
The death of two US officials in a car accident in Chihuahua state has once again raised questions around the extent of US involvement in Mexican security operations. The officials died alongside two agents from the Chihuahua state intelligence agency (AEI) who were returning from an anti-cartel operation. The federal government led by President Claudia Sheinbaum has stated that it was unaware of the officials’ presence in Mexico, while authorities in Chihuahua have insisted the officials did not take part in any security operations. However, media reports claiming the officials were working for the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) have raised further questions at a time when US President Donald Trump has repeatedly pressured Sheinbaum to let US forces take part in operations in Mexico and threatened to take unilateral action on Mexican soil.
