REGION-CUBA: Rubio attends Caricom summit amid regional divisions

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio paid a one-day visit to the Caribbean last week where he attended the 24-27 February summit of the Caribbean Community (Caricom) in Saint Kitts and Nevis (currently the bloc’s chair). The summit took place amid growing divisions within Caricom with regard to the US administration led by President Donald Trump and its actions, such as the destruction of alleged drug trafficking boats in the Caribbean and the military incursion in Venezuela, as well as its oil blockade of Cuba which, while not a Caricom member, has historical links to the bloc.
