COLOMBIA: Petro strikes rapport with Trump

At first blush Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro and his US peer Donald Trump would seem like two of the least likely candidates to get along well. And yet in their first meeting, which took place in the White House on 3 February, the two heads of state appear to have established a personal connection, which could lead to deeper security cooperation. Petro has directed a stream of invective at Trump, largely on social media but also at a pro-Palestinian rally on the streets of New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) last September when he urged the US military to disobey illegal orders, leading to his visa being revoked and sanctions imposed. Trump has given as good as he gets on social media but despite the diatribes and clear differences, it is possible he might recognise in Petro a kindred spirit. This does not preclude combustible exchanges down the line.
