In brief: Chile’s unemployment rate declines year-on-year while informality rises

*Chile’s national statistics institute (INE) has released new unemployment figures for the October-December quarter, showing that the unemployment rate fell slightly to 8.0%, down by 0.1 percentage point on the same quarter in 2024. However, the unemployment rate was up from 7.6% in the immediately preceding September-November rolling quarter. The year-on-year drop resulted from a 1.8% rise in the workforce. The number of unemployed people rose by 1.4%, driven by those who are seeking work for the first time (+24.4%). The informality rate stood at 26.8%, a 0.4 percentage point increase over the last 12 months but down from a rate of 27.9% in the immediately preceding quarter. The informality rate among women was 28.7% while it stood at 25.4% among men, with year-on-year variations of +0.3 and +0.6 percentage points, respectively.
