HONDURAS: Trump-backed candidate assumes office

Former Tegucigalpa mayor (2014-2022), Nasry Asfura, of the right-wing Partido Nacional (PN), has been sworn in as Honduras’s new president for a four-year term. His inauguration on 27 January would appear to draw a line under the tumult following the 30 November presidential election which was marred by technical issues, alleged irregularities, and complaints of US meddling amid fulsome support from President Donald Trump for Asfura, who defeated Salvador Nasralla of the Partido Liberal (PL) by less than one percentage point.
