MEXICO: Morena under pressure over megaproject safety

The derailment of a passenger train in Mexico’s southern state of Oaxaca has raised questions around the safety of the infrastructure megaprojects championed by the ruling left-wing Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) governments of President Claudia Sheinbaum and her predecessor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024). The accident occurred on the interoceanic railway of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, which connects the Pacific Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico and forms part of a trade and transit corridor launched by López Obrador in 2023. Suspicions had already existed that this project, as well as another flagship rail project, the Tren Maya, had been fast-tracked to meet policy goals. The incident will raise further scrutiny on these projects and pile pressure on Sheinbaum to ensure rail projects earmarked by her government meet safety criteria.
