MEXICO: Key arrests over high-profile mayor’s murder
Authorities in Mexico have been making progress in the investigation into the killing of Uruapan mayor, Carlos Manzo Rodríguez, announcing prominent arrests in recent days. These include an alleged mastermind of the killing, seven of Manzo’s own security team, and an alleged cartel recruiter. Given the high-profile nature of the murder, which was one of the instigators of the mass anti-government protests seen last week [WR-25-46], President Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration is keen to ensure justice for the killing and to demonstrate the strength of its intelligence and investigation work, a key pillar of the president’s security strategy.
