Ecuador’s umbrella indigenous organisation Confederación de Nacionalidades Indígenas del Ecuador (Conaie) has been a potent foe of successive governments. Major indigenous protests against the current administration have so far been avoided since President Daniel Noboa took office in November 2023, but Conaie was nevertheless fiercely critical of the government under the leadership of Leonidas Iza (2021-2024).
