ECUADOR: Hopes for reset in indigenous relations

Ecuador’s umbrella indigenous organisation Confederación de Nacionalidades Indígenas del Ecuador (Conaie) has been a potent foe of successive governments. Major indigenous protests against the current administration have so far been avoided since President Daniel Noboa took office in November 2023, but Conaie was nevertheless fiercely critical of the government under the leadership of Leonidas Iza (2021-2024). Iza was replaced as Conaie leader on 21 July by Marlon Vargas whose rise was welcomed by the Noboa administration as an opportunity to improve relations.
