A three-way deal that saw prisoners exchanged between El Salvador, Venezuela, and the US on 18 July was hailed by all three countries as a diplomatic coup. The 252 Venezuelans who were accused of being gang members and were deported from the US to El Salvador in March were repatriated to Venezuela. In exchange, Venezuela’s government released 10 imprisoned Americans and said it would release 80 political prisoners.
