Mexico’s ruling left-wing Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) rarely looks uncomfortable. However, the party has been on the backfoot in recent days amid a scandal linking the administration of a Morena heavyweight in Tabasco state with organised crime. The scandal looks set to test Morena’s unity as well as its professed commitment to rooting out corruption. The scandal is all the more sensitive given the close links of the heavyweight in question to former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024).
