Petro accused of inciting violence as senator shot

The motivations behind an assassination attempt against conservative opposition Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay remained shrouded in uncertainty at the time of writing in late June. Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro has nevertheless found himself on the back foot as he faces accusations that his often hostile rhetoric has resulted in an act of political violence that recalled some of the worst scenes from the 1980s and 1990s. The government insists that it is too early to draw conclusions from the case.
