BRAZIL: Ruling PT picks more moderate party leader
The ruling left-wing Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT) has chosen Edinho Silva as its next national party president, succeeding Gleisi Hoffmann, who led the party during its most turbulent times. It is unclear if Silva will be able to strengthen the party’s status as the spearhead of the Brazilian left. With his four-year term due to start in August this year, Silva will chair the party during the 2026 general elections and will be responsible for negotiating electoral alliances with centrist and conservative parties to ensure that they do not rally behind candidates aligned with the far right.
