The senate of the province of Buenos Aires has approved a legislative initiative to grant the option of indefinite re-election to members of the provincial congress. The timing of the initiative, which now needs to be approved by the lower chamber, just weeks before provincial legislative elections on 7 September plays into President Javier Milei’s hands. The Partido Justicialista (PJ, Peronist), which pushed through the bill, had shown signs of galvanising supporters after former president Cristina Fernández (2007-2015) was sentenced to six years of house arrest.
